Why We Made the Toolkit
The global skin lightening industry is projected to exceed $11.8 billion by 2026, reflecting a troubling demand fueled by colorist beauty standards and harmful societal messaging. This market poses serious risks to public health, as many widely used products contain toxic ingredients like
mercury, hydroquinone, and corticosteroids.
Studies show that 1 in 4 users suffer adverse effects, including skin thinning, irreversible discoloration, kidney damage, and neurological complications. These harms disproportionately impact communities of color—particularly Black and Brown women—who are often targeted by advertising that equates lighter skin with beauty, success, and social value. The lack of regulation and public awareness makes this not just a cosmetic issue, but a pressing health and human rights concern. We seek to raise awareness, inform safer choices, and dismantle the cultural pressures often driving the use of these dangerous products.
